Aimplas Launches Study on Digital Product Passport and Reuse Solutions for Plastic Packaging

The Spanish Plastics Technology Center, Aimplas, is researching digital product passports and reusable packaging systems as part of the "Verso" research project. The aim is to enhance traceability, support eco-design, and promote compliance with European regulations.
Eco-design is key to developing reusable packaging systems that comply with EU regulations.
The Verso project focuses on the implementation of Digital Product Passports (DPP) and the development and validation of reuse systems for plastic packaging. This project builds upon earlier research into digital passports for plastic products, which examined regulatory requirements and circular economy principles related to recycling and waste management.
Verso has extended these efforts by integrating digital traceability tools with the development of more sustainable packaging solutions. Digital Product Passports are designed to provide information covering the entire lifecycle of packaging, from design and production to end-of-life management.
The project also applies the "Safe and Sustainable by Design" (SSbD) approach to assess environmental, social, and economic impacts, as well as industry-specific risks. This approach aims to support the development of more durable, reusable, and recyclable packaging, while prioritizing waste prevention.
Industrial Partner Support for Practical Verification
Aimplas is collaborating with packaging manufacturer ITC Packaging and Reciclamás, a specialist in the recycling sector, which will contribute its expertise in the recycling of post-consumer materials.
The expected outcomes include the design and validation of reusable packaging, a roadmap for sustainable packaging management, and the pilot implementation of Digital Product Passports. The project will also develop guidelines to enhance packaging sustainability and regulatory compliance throughout the product lifecycle.
Verso is funded by the Valencian Institute for Competitiveness and Innovation (IVACE+i) and supported by the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF).
