2025 china sales hit 10-year low, market share continues to shrink

According to data from the General Administration of Customs, China imported 476,000 automobiles in 2025, a year-on-year decrease of 32.4%.

Import value reached 23.64 billion US dollars, a year-on-year decrease of 39.7%, hitting a new decade low in sales after continuous declines for several years.

Reviewing the import car market trend, 2014 saw a peak of 1.43 million units in sales, followed by an average annual decline of around 8% starting in 2017, with 2025 sales only reaching one-third of the peak volume.

In this downturn, luxury and ultra-luxury brands were almost universally hit, with sales of ultra-luxury brands such as Porsche, Ferrari, and Bentley all experiencing double-digit declines.

Maserati has changed its China head three times in two years due to poor performance. Only Lexus has shown relatively stable performance, with annual imported sales of 184,100 vehicles, a slight year-on-year increase of 2%.

Impacted by this, some imported luxury car models have seen significant price drops, with models like the Maserati Grecale experiencing price reductions of up to 40%.

At the same time, high-end domestic new energy vehicles are rising strongly, continuously seizing market share from imported cars.

In 2025, BYD Yangwang U8 became the top seller among million-level domestic luxury cars, while Zunjie S800 consecutively ranked first in sales for luxury sedans priced above 700,000 for three months. AITO M9, meanwhile, retained its crown as the sales champion for vehicles priced above 500,000.

Based on current market trends, industry insiders predict that China's imported car sales may decline by another 10% in 2026, posing severe transformation pressure on imported car dealers.
