Zero Cabin Waste

Iberia, together with Ecoembes, Gate Gourmet (GG), Ferrovial, and ESCI-UPF, has been developing the Life + "Zero Cabin Waste" project since September 2016 until December 2019. The aim of this project is to improve the management of waste generated from aircraft catering services. Both the so-called Category 3 waste (generated on community flights - within the European Union) and Category 1 waste (generated on non-community flights) will be addressed. Throughout the project, different waste flows generated in the aircraft cabin will be studied, measures for minimization will be proposed, and the separation of waste onboard (recoverable and non-recoverable fractions) will be implemented, as well as the collection and treatment of different waste flows. Particular attention will be given to Category 1 waste (Cat.1), as current Spanish regulations only consider its destination to landfill or incineration, proposing management that allows for alternative treatment measures for this waste. Ultimately, a procedure will be developed that establishes the basis for sustainable waste management, with the least possible impact, analyzing the current management and the proposed management through life cycle analysis. This website will provide all updated information throughout the 40 months of the project’s life and the results obtained ultimately.
