Zeppelin Power Systems has completed the remotorization of the TMS Max in June 2018. The 105-meter-long inland tanker had previously suffered an age-related engine failure in Holland and had to be towed to the Duisburg port. With the help of various suppliers and the newly installed crane on-site, Zeppelin Power Systems was able to make all necessary adjustments in the engine room and install the new engine within three weeks. The new engine is a Cat 3512C with a power of 1,119 kW at 1,600 RPM. Since its cooling circuits and connections differ from those of the predecessor engine, the service technicians adapted both the exhaust and cooling water lines. As the general contractor, Zeppelin Power Systems also coordinated the other necessary trades. The shipyard work, such as piping construction and shipbuilding and welding work, was carried out by the Cologne shipyard Deutz (KSD). Electrical engineering was handled by Schroer. "Since we have a long-standing and trusting business relationship with Zeppelin Power Systems, the company was our first point of contact after the engine failure," explains Max Büchner, Managing Director of Büchner Tankschiff GmbH and operator/owner of the TMS Max. "Thanks to the quick and flexible help, we were able to complete the remotorization quickly and put the tanker back into operation in no time." Due to a large inventory of engines of various power classes in stock at the Achim location, Zeppelin Power Systems can also respond quickly to urgent requests and carry out complete remotorizations on short notice. Higher availability of engines As part of the work on the TMS Max, Zeppelin Power Systems also installed a remote monitoring system for remote diagnosis and maintenance. This allows Büchner Tankschiff GmbH to reduce its operating costs: A service technician can immediately and independently assess whether a service intervention is necessary, what work may be required, and what spare parts are needed. This procedure saves time and unnecessary on-site visits and allows for higher availability of the engines.
