Conditions for optimal planing of the boat hull The optimal performance, proper planing characteristics, maximum top speed, and optimal fuel consumption of a medium-sized (450cm-650cm) boat hull equipped with the appropriately chosen powered outboard motor - naturally considering the transported weight (people + equipment) - are primarily determined by three things: - The actual depth of the drive propulsion, i.e. the precise setting of the motor height! - The geometry of the propeller used on the motor (size, length, and number of blades)! - The choice and use of the appropriate trim angle during starting or while moving! 2. Accurate determination of motor height for an outboard motor An outboard motor operated at optimal height delivers its performance as efficiently as possible, since the drag effect created at this height balances with the drive, i.e. the well-sized propeller's power transmission, thrust, and efficiency! If the motor operates too low, energy loss occurs due to drag! If the ventilation plate is underwater, it creates unnecessary drag and can even cause splashing! If it's too high, proper water cooling won't occur, and during cornering, the propeller can suck air, starting to ventilate! (cavitation sound) 3. The relationship between trim angle/position and perfect planing A motor operated at the ideal, precise motor height will almost automatically reach the correct trim angle during perfect (ideal) planing because the angle of the drive unit at the ideal trim position delivers the greatest power, where the thrust vector of the drive achieves a perfect horizontal state! 4. The relationship between ideal propeller sizing and motor performance In this state, the drive direction is horizontal, and in this neutral trim position, we can state that the given propeller operates most efficiently, as all blades work symmetrically in every position, balanced with the drive. 5. The relationship between side-view sonar-image quality-motor leg-JackPlate By installing an appropriately sized JackPlate on a fishing boat, all problems arising from our outboard motor's drive leg obscuring or interfering with the line of our side-view sonar are eliminated, generally leading to poorer quality sonar images on the port side.
