The International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative (IPSI) is an important organization for the international maintenance of agricultural production landscapes and biodiversity. It advocates for the effective management of social-ecological production landscapes, which also helps mitigate and adapt to climate change, particularly through the protection and enhancement of carbon sinks and stores, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, and improvement of disaster resilience to reduce the negative impacts of climate change at the landscape ecosystem scale. The Satoyama Mace Initiative is an international project authorized by the United Nations "International Partnership for the Satoyama Initiative" to be carried out in 2024. The Satoyama Mace Initiative includes widely applicable practices in agricultural and food security, biodiversity conservation, circular economy, land use and land-use change, natural capital, natural resource management, agricultural waste, water-energy-food utilization, alternative clean energy, sustainable infrastructure for biocarbon technology, biodiversity carbon sink technology development and assessment, biodiversity carbon reduction project research, biodiversity carbon rights issuance and certification, and rural regeneration. This platform is operated by the Satoyama Mace Initiative team as a non-profit platform serving the world in practicing the Satoyama Initiative and biodiversity. It focuses on local actions, education, relationship building, and research. The goal is to create a sustainable economic chain through biocarbon technology, biodiversity carbon sink technology development and assessment, biodiversity carbon reduction project research, and biodiversity carbon rights issuance and certification, implementing the global agreement of the Convention on Biological Diversity COP15. Subsequently, the goal is to issue Verified Carbon Units (VCUs) combined with the management of SEPLS and to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF). By combining scientific rigor and transparency with innovative thinking, the initiative aims to deepen the understanding of the importance of SEPLS for achieving structural transformation, enhancing resilience, and leaving no one behind.
