Desmet Company was founded in 1946. Mr. Jean Albert Desmet designed and developed the world's first track-type continuous extractor. At that time, Mr. Desmet was the president of an oil pressing plant in Antwerp, and he decided to establish a company for his patent to sell this invention, thus founding Desmet Company. The company quickly expanded its product range, from oil imports to bottled salad oils, providing a full set of equipment for oil processing, such as: pretreatment, pressing, extraction refining, and modification. Desmet's equipment can handle over 40 types of raw materials, with soybeans, sunflower seeds, rapeseed, peanuts, cottonseeds, and palm oil being particularly popular among customers. Since early 2004, international private investors interested in agricultural production have become the major shareholders of Desmet, including some American companies engaged in the manufacture of agricultural product processing equipment. In November 2004, Desmet and the Italian Barale agreed to merge their operations, reaching an agreement to coordinate their global commercial activities, thereby making better use of the technical and commercial strengths of both companies. Founded in 1960, Barale is a leader in the technology, engineering, installation, and supply of equipment for surfactants, detergents, and related products. Barale also operates jointly with Mazzoni, which specializes in the overall design and equipment supply for soap and glycerin plants. The Desmet Barale Group has established subsidiaries in 15 countries and representative offices in another 22, selling 5,700 production lines to 148 countries. The total turnover in 2004 reached 250 million US dollars. The merged Desmet Barale has become an "all-inclusive solution provider" in the field of oils and fats.
