PCTFE, or poly(chlorotrifluoroethylene), is a polymer compound formed by the polymerization of chlorotrifluoroethylene. The low molecular weight variant is a liquid or wax-like substance, while the high molecular weight variant is a white solid or dispersion. The solid density ranges from 2.1 to 2.2. The melting point is between 208 and 210°C. It is resistant to heat, acid, alkali, and organic solvents (except for halides), but not resistant to molten caustic alkali and elemental fluorine. It dissolves in aromatic hydrocarbons. Its chemical resistance properties are second only to polytetrafluoroethylene. It can be used as an engineering plastic. The tensile strength ranges from 3.096 to 4.135 MPa (316 to 422 kgf/cm²). It is generally used in chemical equipment with high performance requirements, insulated cables, radio components, capacitors, and heat-resistant or low-temperature-resistant fittings, among others. The dispersion is used to produce corrosion-resistant coatings and films. The synthesis methods for PCTFE include bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, and dispersion polymerization, using peroxides as initiators for free radical polymerization. PCTFE possesses excellent chemical stability, insulation, and weather resistance, allowing for long-term use at temperatures ranging from -196 to 125°C. Its mechanical strength and hardness are superior to polytetrafluoroethylene, and when made into films, it exhibits good transparency and low gas permeability. PCTFE is suitable for applications involving contact with highly corrosive media, sealing and gasket materials in high-pressure systems, transparent materials for observation windows, and electrical insulation materials. Therefore, it holds special significance in the chemical and atomic energy industries, although it is more expensive than polytetrafluoroethylene. Low molecular weight PCTFE has high density, excellent viscosity-temperature characteristics, and chemical corrosion resistance, making it suitable as sealing liquids for highly corrosive media, lubricants, and balancing liquids for navigation gyroscopes. PCTFE exhibits excellent rigidity, low-temperature performance, and cold flow resistance, making it an ideal sealing material for low-temperature and high-pressure conditions, with special applications in high-tech fields.
