Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet is a high-performance engineering plastic, such as high wear resistance, impact resistance, very low friction coefficient, good self-lubricating properties, excellent low temperature resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance.
1. Improve wear resistance. One of the remarkable properties of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is its extremely high wear resistance, which is very valuable in many engineering applications. Among all plastics currently available, its wear resistance is the best, even better than many metal materials (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.). As the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, its wear resistance also increases.
2. Extremely high impact resistance. The impact strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet is related to its molecular weight. When the molecular weight is below 2 million, the impact strength increases with the increase of molecular weight. At around 2 million, it reaches a peak. After the peak, as the molecular weight continues to increase, the impact strength decreases. This is because the molecular chain greatly hinders its crystallization, allowing for the absorption of large amounts of impact energy in large amorphous regions within the large molecules.
According to literature, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet has impact strength values measured by the ASTM-D256 method, which show that the impact resistance of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet at room temperature is comparable to that of polycarbonate known for impact resistance, making it suitable for common engineering plastics. Even at -40°C, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene still has excellent impact resistance, and even at a temperature of -269°C, it can still maintain good impact resistance. This excellent low temperature performance expands the application of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene to the field of low-temperature engineering.
3. Very low friction coefficient. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is very wear-resistant, with a low friction coefficient and good self-lubricating properties, making it an ideal material for bearings, bushings, sliders, and liners.
Using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as the frictional parts of equipment can not only improve wear life but also achieve energy-saving effects.
4. Good chemical corrosion resistance. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet has excellent chemical corrosion resistance. Except for concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrofluoric acid, it is not corroded by all alkaline and acidic liquids, and can even be used in concentrated nitric acid below 20% and concentrated hydrofluoric acid below 75% at a temperature of 80°C (it is also stable in water and liquid detergents).
However, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is highly prone to swelling in aromatic or halogenated compounds (especially at high temperatures), so special attention should be paid when using it.
5. Very low water absorption. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has very low water absorption, almost none, does not swell in water, and has much lower water absorption than nylon.
6. Thermal properties. According to the ASTM (load 4.6 kg/cm2) method, the heat deflection temperature is 85°C, and the service temperature can reach 90°C under a smaller load. In special cases, it can be used at even higher temperatures. Due to its excellent toughness, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene also has very good low temperature resistance. At a low temperature of -269°C, it still has a certain degree of elongation without any signs of brittle cracking.
7. Electrical properties. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet has excellent electrical properties over a wide temperature range. Its volume resistivity reaches 10^18cm, breakdown voltage reaches 50KV/mm, and dielectric constant is 2.3. Its electrical properties vary very little over a wide range of temperatures and frequencies. Within the temperature range of heat resistance, it is very suitable for use as structural material in electrical engineering and materials in pulp mills.
8. Non-toxicity. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is tasteless, non-toxic, odorless, non-corrosive, and has physiological inertia and physiological adaptability. It is allowed to be used in contact with food and drugs by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the US Department of Agriculture (USDA).
These characteristics, especially wear resistance, impact resistance, and self-lubricating properties, are excellent in engineering plastics. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheet (UHMWPE) combines the superior performance of all plastics. Its five characteristics of impact resistance, wear resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, self-lubrication, and energy absorption are currently the highest among plastics. The outstanding performance of this new type of plastic product has been widely recognized in various countries in Europe and America. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene resin is a thermoplastic engineering plastic with a uniform molecular weight greater than 1.5 to 7 million, which is polymerized from ethylene and butadiene monomers under the action of a catalyst, and is called the "magical plastic."
