PCTFE, or polytrichloroethylene, is a high molecular compound formed by the polymerization of trichloroethylene. The low molecular weight variant is a liquid or waxy substance, while the high molecular weight variant is a white solid or dispersion. The solid has a density of 2.1-2.2 g/cm³ and a melting point of 208-210°C. It exhibits resistance to heat, acids, alkalis, and organic solvents (except halides), but it is not resistant to molten caustic alkalis and elemental fluorine. It is soluble in aromatic hydrocarbons. The chemical resistance of PCTFE is second only to that of polytetrafluoroethylene. It can be used as engineering plastic. Its tensile strength ranges from 3.096 to 4.135 MPa (316 to 422 kgf/cm²). It is commonly used in chemical equipment with high performance requirements, insulated cables, radio components, capacitors, and heat-resistant or low-temperature resistant fittings. The dispersion is used to formulate corrosion-resistant coatings and films. The synthesis methods for PCTFE include bulk polymerization, solution polymerization, and dispersion polymerization, using peroxides as initiators for free radical polymerization. PCTFE has excellent chemical stability, insulation properties, and weather resistance, allowing it to be used continuously at temperatures ranging from -196 to 125°C. Its mechanical strength and hardness are superior to those of polytetrafluoroethylene, and when made into films, it exhibits good transparency and low gas permeability. PCTFE is suitable for applications involving contact with highly corrosive media, sealing and gasket materials for high-pressure systems, transparent materials for observation windows, as well as electrical insulation materials. Therefore, it holds special significance in the chemical and atomic energy industries, although it is more expensive than polytetrafluoroethylene. The low molecular weight variant of PCTFE has high density, excellent viscosity-temperature characteristics, and chemical resistance, making it suitable for use as a sealing liquid for highly corrosive media, lubricants, and balance fluids for navigation gyroscopes. PCTFE exhibits outstanding rigidity, low-temperature performance, and resistance to cold flow, making it an ideal sealing material under low-temperature high-pressure conditions, with special applications in high-tech fields.
