Molybdenum disulfide has a hexagonal crystal layer structure with the chemical formula MoS2, and is the main component of molybdenite. It appears as a black-gray solid powder with a metallic luster, has a smooth feel, and is odorless. It has a melting point of 2375°C, a density of 4.80 g/cm³, and a friction coefficient ranging from 0.02 to 0.10. The usable temperature range is -180 to 343°C. It is insoluble in water, dilute acids, and concentrated sulfuric acid but dissolves in hot sulfuric acid. Generally, it does not dissolve in other acids, alkalis, organic solvents, or in petroleum and synthetic lubricants. It does not chemically react with most metal surfaces and does not corrode rubber materials. In air, it undergoes slow oxidation at around 350°C.
