Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE), also known as high-pressure polyethylene, is the lightest variety of polyethylene resins. It appears as a milky white, odorless, tasteless, non-toxic, and glossy wax-like granule. It possesses excellent flexibility, extensibility, electrical insulation, transparency, ease of processing, and certain permeability. Its chemical stability is good, being resistant to alkalis and common organic solvents. The main characteristics of low density polyethylene are as follows: 1. The film has a slightly milky white transparent color and is soft. It has lower strength compared to high-density polyethylene but higher impact strength. 2. It is resistant to cold, low temperatures, and relatively high temperatures. Thicker films can withstand sterilization processes involving immersion in 90°C hot water. 3. It has good moisture resistance and stable chemical properties, being insoluble in common solvents. 4. It has considerable permeability, so it is not suitable for long-term storage of easily oxidized foods. 5. It has poor resistance to oils, and products can be slowly swollen. When used to package oily foods, prolonged storage can cause the food to develop a rancid flavor. 6. Long-term exposure to ultraviolet light and heat can cause aging, affecting its physical and dielectric properties. 7. Its melting point is 110-115°C, and the processing temperature ranges from 150-210°C. In an inert gas environment, it remains stable up to 300°C. However, contact with oxygen during melting can lead to degradation.
