Toray Industries Develops High Antistatic ABS Resin, Surface Resistivity Reduced to 1/5 of Traditional Products

Plastmatch Global Digest 2026-01-13 11:57:36

Toray Industries, a Japanese material supplier, has successfully developed a high antistatic type Toyolacparel acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin. The new product's surface resistivity is as low as 10⁹ ohms/square, which is only one-fifth of the company's traditional similar products.

The Toyolacparel series resin achieves long-lasting antistatic performance by constructing a three-dimensional continuous network structure of antistatic polymers within the ABS substrate. The low surface resistivity of this new composite material is derived from Toray's proprietary polymer alloy technology, which includes improvements and upgrades at the molecular design level and micron-level precise control of the continuous network structure. This technological upgrade further expands the application potential of the high antistatic Toyolacparel series, meeting more stringent antistatic requirements and accommodating a broader range of application scenarios.

Reduce product damage and defects.

The new resin grade is primarily used for carriers such as trays and housings in the manufacturing processes of semiconductors and electronic devices. It can suppress the generation of trace static electricity, thereby reducing the risk of damage or defects caused by dust and other contaminants. Toray plans to start customer sample delivery in April 2026 and will continue to advance related research and development work.

Adapt to electric vehicle production scenarios.

Although this material primarily targets the semiconductor manufacturing sector, its technology is also applicable in various scenarios: components at gas stations and airports (to prevent static sparks that could ignite fires), transfer pallets in the production process of electric vehicle batteries, as well as household appliances such as air purifiers, air conditioners, and vacuum cleaners.

Miniaturization and integration of components drive the demand for upgraded antistatic properties of resins.

In recent years, the semiconductor market has experienced rapid growth. As semiconductor devices continue to evolve towards miniaturization and high integration, even a small amount of static electricity can cause product damage and lead to reduced yields. This trend is driving higher demands for the anti-static performance of transport materials in the manufacturing process.

At the same time, the market demand for transparent shells and colored identification components is rising steadily, making the design and appearance of materials increasingly critical. Currently, anti-static ABS resin with added conductive fillers is widely used, but when black anti-static additives such as carbon black or carbon fiber are used, the durability of anti-static properties, the appearance of injection-molded parts, and color compatibility are all limited. This pain point has created an urgent need for new materials—a product that can simultaneously address the aforementioned issues.
