[Hek Lab] Launches Everyday Shoe EDDY 3D-Printed Using Single TPU Material

Recently, Hek Lab, a studio specializing in footwear design and utilizing additive manufacturing technology, launched the EDDY shoe—a 3D-printed model designed specifically for everyday wear. The release of EDDY aims to address consumers’ ongoing concerns about 3D-printed footwear, which typically stem from unfamiliar materials, high prices, lengthy production cycles, and experimental aesthetics. Rather than pursuing eye-catching, avant-garde concepts, EDDY prioritizes practicality and wearability for daily use.

The EDDY shoe model was developed by Hek Lab in collaboration with 3D printing shoe company Zellerfeld, marking Hek Lab's transition from conceptual experimentation to commercial daily-wear products. The EDDY shoe design is based on the natural foot shape, ensuring a light and comfortable feel while also providing stability and comfort for daily walking.
Zellerfeld stated: “Hek Lab’s design inspiration stems from nature and the experiences humans create within it. We are committed to exploring the concept of circular footwear through 3D printing technology. Hek Lab’s design philosophy is to pose questions rather than provide answers—aiming to deliver unexpected surprises instead of uniform, predictable outcomes.”
The EDDY shoe model is produced on-demand using Zellerfeld's proprietary additive manufacturing technology. The upper is printed using ZellerFoam, a thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) material specifically developed for 3D printed shoes. The EDDY model is made from a single material, completely eliminating the need for stitching and adhesives, which not only simplifies the production process but also aligns with the concept of circular recycling. According to Zellerfeld, the material is 100% recyclable and can be used to make new shoes. The company also mentioned the current use of the GEN3 system, which is said to have a significantly increased printing speed compared to its predecessors - this is crucial for on-demand production, effectively controlling the production cycle and unit cost.

The EDDY shoe features a herringbone-patterned outsole that delivers reliable traction on various surfaces; an open-mesh upper that enhances breathability and flexibility; and elevated side walls that help protect the feet in wet conditions.
The EDDY footwear is now officially available for purchase at a price of $149.
