Abag Halts US Expansion Plan, Focuses on China Market

Plastmatch Global Digest 2026-03-16 13:55:17

German mechanical engineering manufacturer Arburg GmbH + Co. KG announced that, due to economic uncertainty and volatility in the trade environment, it has decided to postpone its planned production expansion in the United States.

The company's CEO Volker Nilles stated that the company will prioritize the necessary capacity expansion and equipment upgrades, and closely monitor market developments.

In an interview, Niles stated: "Overall, the world has undergone dramatic changes in recent years, at a pace far exceeding what was anticipated just a few years ago. The globalization process we once knew has, at the very least, come to a temporary halt, giving way to a tripolar global. The resulting geopolitical and geoeconomic challenges, shifting market demands—such as the need for faster time-to-market—and immense cost pressures are now core issues we face on a daily basis."

Arburg shifts production expansion focus to China

While postponing the expansion of U.S. production, Arburg continues to advance its long-term internationalization strategy, adhering to the “local-to-local” development model. Nilles pointed out that, given the unique demands of the Chinese market, China remains a key focus area for the company’s assembly operations.

"In focusing on the long-term internationalization strategy of 'local adaptation to local', we have always been clear that we will start the assembly business in China first." Niles said, "Currently, we already have products specifically customized for the Asian market, such as the Flexlift manipulator, which also lays the foundation for our layout in China."

Although Arburg currently has no plans to build an assembly plant in North America, the company will continue to serve its U.S. customers through its existing facilities. Its U.S. headquarters in Rocky Hill, Connecticut, along with its network of technical centers across the United States, will continue to play a pivotal role in consolidating and expanding its market share in North America.

"For years, our U.S. headquarters in Rocky Hill has had the capacity, technology, and human resources to provide personalized customization and automation upgrades for the Allrounders series of injection molding machines for our customers," Nilles mentioned, "In addition, we will further enrich our product portfolio through localized automation solutions and digital products."

Tariffs, Trade Agreements, and Market Volatility Affect Decision-Making

Arburg has postponed its U.S. expansion plans, also affected by ongoing fluctuations in tariffs and trade agreements. Nillstein acknowledged that these factors have posed numerous challenges, but the company remains committed to making long-term strategic decisions based on customer needs and market trends.

We formulate our long-term strategy after comprehensively considering all influencing factors, with a core focus on customer needs and market development trends. Trade agreements and tariff policies are naturally included in our considerations, but we strive to minimize the impact of short-term factors.

Despite facing multiple challenges, Arburg remains optimistic about its ability to adapt and grow amid global market transformations. The company will leverage its existing footprint and focus on customer-centric solutions, navigating the current complex economic environment while building momentum for long-term future growth.
