Kia Plans to Launch High-Performance Electric Flagship Based on New IMA Platform
According to foreign media reports, Kia is planning to launch a high-performance flagship electric vehicle. Developed based on the new Integrated Modular Architecture (IMA), this model is expected to become a future hallmark product for the brand.
Last year-end, Kia unveiled the Vision Meta Turismo concept car. While not a preview of an upcoming production model, it clearly conveyed Kia's design direction in reshaping its premium image in the era of electrification.

In an interview, Kia's Head of Design, Jochen Paesen, stated that now is the right time to explore more emotionally expressive vehicles. He pointed out that the Meta Turismo project was an internal study aimed at considering how to create more emotionally engaging products while retaining the brand's core values. He also mentioned that the concept embodies a reflection on how technology is applied, emphasizing the idea of reducing the number of screens and enhancing the user experience.
While Kia has yet to officially confirm the naming of the new model, the company has registered the trademarks EV7 and EV8, with EV8 considered the most likely designation for this flagship vehicle. However, given its unique positioning, Kia may break away from its existing electric vehicle naming convention and adopt an independent naming scheme. The critically acclaimed Stinger gasoline sports sedan was discontinued in 2023; since it built a significant user base through its distinctive design language, luxurious interior, and BMW-level driving performance, there is also a high possibility that the "Stinger" nameplate could make a return.
The new vehicle is expected to feature Kia's next-generation Software Defined Platform, IMA, which will gradually replace the E-GMP platform currently used in Hyundai-Kia Group's large electric vehicles. The goal is to improve energy efficiency, enhance scalability, and reduce manufacturing costs. The new platform will continue to use an 800-volt electrical system, and is expected to surpass the current maximum charging power level of approximately 240 kilowatts in terms of charging efficiency.
Regarding the release date, Kia could potentially unveil this new vehicle within this year. However, whether it will enter the US market remains uncertain, with production arrangements being a key factor. Currently, Kia's plant in West Point, Georgia, is responsible for producing models like the EV6 and EV9, with an annual capacity of 350,000 units, some of which are exported to Mexico or the Middle East. The upcoming new generation of electric vehicles may rely on Hyundai's newly built dedicated electric vehicle plant in Georgia – Hyundai Metaplant Georgia. This plant is planned to have an annual capacity of 500,000 units and is positioned as the group's first base dedicated to the large-scale production of electric vehicles. Although it is currently only confirmed to produce Hyundai and Genesis brand models, it has the potential to co-produce Kia brand vehicles.
As of now, Kia has not provided further details on the new car's technical specifications, specific launch date, or global market strategy. The unveiling of the Vision Meta Turismo concept and the company's subsequent statements indicate that Kia is systematically advancing its brand premiumization strategy, attempting to reshape its brand image through an electric product that combines aesthetic design and technological sophistication.
