CJ Biomaterials Inc.It is a division of CJ CheilJedang, headquartered in South Korea, and a major producer of polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA) biopolymers.Dongsung Chemical The company has launched its first PHA-based hot melt adhesive in the U.S. market. EcoViva Hotmelt adhesive is specifically designed for packaging applications, targeting cosmetics, household goods, electronics, and other consumer products. It effectively bonds challenging material combinations, including paper to aluminum and paper to acrylonitrile butadiene styrene (ABS).

Bio-based formulations for emissions

EcoViva hot melt adhesive contains biomass content, including CJ Biomaterials' proprietary amorphous PHA biopolymer PHACT A1000P. Compared to traditional polyisobutylene (PIB) adhesives and ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) adhesives, this adhesive is designed to significantly reduce carbon emissions.

It also received the GermanDIN CERTCOBiometric authentication。

Room temperature bonding, existing equipment

The adhesive exhibits excellent cold resistance and can bond at room temperature under low pressure. It is compatible with existing hot-melt nozzles and rollers, accommodating components of various shapes and sizes.

Adhesives have already been used in cosmetic packaging. ByA leading original design and manufacturing (ODM) company for cosmeticsCosMaxCooperationThe PHA-based formula has been incorporated into the packaging of eyeshadow products.

Max Senechal, Chief Commercial Officer of CJ Biomaterials, stated, “By matching the performance of traditional hot-melt adhesives while incorporating renewable bio-based content, this PHA-based hot-melt adhesive offers packaging manufacturers a more sustainable option to meet customer demands and the increasingly stringent carbon and source reduction targets set by global climate and packaging frameworks.”

Fermentation-derived PHA

PHACT A1000PIt is produced through the fermentation of plant sugars and is certified by DIN CERTCO andTÜV Austria OK Bio-based InitiativeCertified as bio-basedand received a four-star rating. When blended with other biopolymers, soft and flexible PHA can reduce brittleness and improve processability, with performance that the company states is equal to or better than that of traditional petroleum-based polymers.

During the Pack Expo trade show held this week at McCormick Place in Chicago, cosmetic packaging featuring CosMax’s EcoViva hot-melt adhesive based on PHACT will be exhibited at the Dongsung Chemical booth (W-42110) and the CJ Biomaterials booth (W-49108).
