Polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) is a typical representative of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS). For some time, the global assessment of its use has become increasingly stringent, because such chemicals are suspected to be harmful to human health.

Nevertheless, PTFE does have certain desirable properties that harmless materials typically lack; for example, in the field of wax additives, traditional PTFE-based products exhibit excellent wear resistance and scratch resistance.

To this end, BYK has developed sustainable alternatives to PE/PTFE wax additives that are both safe and ensure outstanding application performance:

CERAFLOUR 1053 is a new member of this series. It is a compound wax additive based on micronized polyethylene wax and carnauba wax, with a melting point of 115°C, a particle size of D50 = 6 µm and D90 = 10 µm. It is PTFE-free, contains no microplastics, and complies with food contact material regulations.

CERAFLOUR 1053 can provide excellent slip and scratch resistance in solvent-based polyester varnishes.

CERAFLOUR 1053 provides excellent abrasion resistance and good gloss retention in BPA-free systems.

CERAFLOUR 1053 can also be used in waterborne systems, where its excellent slip and scratch resistance offer even greater advantages:
