Cost Comparison of Alternative Plastic Solutions

Plastmatch 2026-07-01 19:47:15

According to the latest market data and industry information compiled by the blogger “,” organize the following cost comparison of various plastic alternatives:

Sort from low to high by cost.

Bamboo-based materials - currently the lowest-cost solution.

Bamboo-based materials are currently the only alternative that has become cheaper than traditional plastics.

- Bamboo film express bags cost about 10%–15% less than traditional PE plastic bags.
- Huge gap in raw material costs: industrial plastic raw materials cost about RMB 10,000 per ton, while bamboo costs only a little over RMB 600 per ton, and even after being processed into bamboo powder, it costs only about RMB 2,000 per ton.
- The core breakthrough lies in high-ratio addition technology—bamboo powder content reaches 40%–70%, significantly reducing overall costs.

The cost advantage of bamboo-based materials fundamentally stems from the fast growth of bamboo (3 to 5 years to maturity), its ability to be harvested repeatedly, and China's bamboo forest area exceeding 8 million hectares, which provides an extremely abundant supply of raw materials.

PBAT—the cheapest biodegradable plastic

The current market average price is approximately 11,600 yuan/ton.
- By comparison, conventional LDPE plastic costs about 7,000–10,000 yuan per ton, while PBAT is priced at approximately 1.2–1.6 times that amount.
Due to severe overcapacity (China’s production capacity exceeded 1.7 million tons in 2025, with an operating rate of only 15.8%), prices have fallen to a historic low.

PLA — medium cost

The current market average price is approximately 17,200 to 18,100 yuan/ton.
- Down approximately 43% from the 2021 peak, with prices continuing to decline.
It is expected to drop to around 8,000 yuan/ton by 2030.

PBS — medium to high cost

- The current average price is approximately 16,500 yuan/ton.
- The market size is relatively small, and prices are relatively stable.

PHA — currently the most expensive

- The price is as high as about 400,000 yuan per ton, which is more than ten times, or even dozens of times, that of other biodegradable materials.
- Only applicable to high value-added sectors such as pharmaceuticals; it is still far from large-scale substitution.

If cost is your top concern, bamboo-based materials are currently the most cost-effective alternative. They are not just “eco-friendly without being expensive,” but have truly achieved being “both greener and cheaper.” This is also why, in June 2026, the China Express Association officially released a five-year promotion plan for “replacing plastic with bamboo,” aiming for the annual use of bamboo express packaging to reach 1 billion units by 2030.

Next is PBAT, which has the lowest cost among fully biodegradable plastics and is suitable for applications that require high flexibility, such as express delivery bags and agricultural films.
