BASF To Expand Taiwan Semiconductor Materials Base
BASF SE (Ludwigshafen, Germany) has signed a letter of intent with Taiwan’s Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), underscoring its long-term commitment to supporting the growth of Taiwan’s semiconductor ecosystem. Through this investment, BASF’s Electronic Materials business is expanding its Guanyin site in Taoyuan by increasing production capacity for advanced semiconductor materials, enhancing quality analysis capabilities, and enlarging its innovation center. This investment aims to support the growing global demand for cutting-edge semiconductor manufacturing technologies, including advanced nodes below 2 nanometers, while strengthening supply chain resilience and customer proximity.
Taiwan is a global hub for semiconductor innovation and manufacturing, boasting advanced process technologies and a highly integrated industrial ecosystem. Gops Pillay, President of Global Operations at BASF, stated, “Laying the strategic foundation for BASF’s global electronic materials business in Taiwan by 2025 reflects the island’s strategic importance within the global semiconductor ecosystem and reinforces our confidence in the market’s long-term growth potential.”
As the semiconductor industry advances to process nodes below 2 nanometers, demand for advanced, high-purity specialty chemical formulations continues to rise. By expanding its Kuanyin site, BASF will strengthen its innovation center and broaden its technological and analytical capabilities to support cutting-edge semiconductor technologies in the AI era. This investment will deepen collaborations with key industry partners, enabling joint development of next-generation materials, while reinforcing Taiwan’s position as a global hub for semiconductor innovation.
This investment will further strengthen BASF’s local manufacturing, quality assurance, and technical service capabilities in Taiwan, enabling the company to provide customers with a more reliable supply of advanced semiconductor materials, faster technical support, and closer collaboration. Meanwhile, it will enhance supply chain resilience and reinforce BASF’s role as a trusted long-term partner in the semiconductor industry.
Jens Liebermann, Senior Vice President of Global Electronic Materials and Chairman of BASF Taiwan, stated, “The signing of this letter of intent marks another significant milestone in BASF’s long-term commitment to the semiconductor industry.” He added, “As semiconductor technology continues to advance, material innovations must keep pace with our customers’ evolving needs. By strengthening our local manufacturing, innovation, and technical service capabilities, we are deepening collaboration with our customers and accelerating the development of material solutions for future technology generations, while further enhancing supply chain resilience.”
As a trusted materials partner for the global semiconductor industry, BASF’s Electronics Materials business has maintained a strong presence in Taiwan for over two decades. The business provides high-performance process chemicals and customized formulation solutions for the advanced semiconductor and display industries, as well as specialized metal systems for consumer electronics applications.
