Barrier Paper Packaging Expands Its Coverage

As the company expands its barrier technology for paper packaging applications, the race for paper-based solutions is in full swing. Professional paper manufacturers and flexible packaging companiesRapids Paper + PackagingCreating new opportunities for brands to reduce plastic use in broader flexible packaging formats, the company has expanded the commercial availability of its Ecova platform’s heat-sealable, functional barrier paper packaging solutions.
Ecova for barrier-sensitive applications
John Wilson, Marketing Director at Rapids Paper + Packaging, stated that Ecova Barrier is designed for products sensitive to moisture, oxygen, or grease.
This can include dry goods such as grains, rice, cereals, and pasta; dry mixes and powdered foods; frozen fruits, vegetables, and other frozen applications; snack applications, including chocolate, potato chips, cookies, granola, and fruit snacks. Pet treats, food, and supplements may also benefit from Ecova Barrier.
Heat sealing expands the range of applications.
Heat-sealability makes paper suitable for flexible packaging, while functional barrier properties expand its potential applications. Built on the existing Ecova platform, Ecova Barrier offers moisture resistance, designed to protect products that require greater resistance to water vapor transmission.
Wilson stated that the chemical composition of coatings varies depending on the required barrier properties and the packaged product.
A moisture vapor transmission rate (MVTR) below 0.7 g/100 in²/day (below 10 g/m²/day) offers commercial structures more opportunities for brands to replace plastics in selected food and consumer product applications.
Based on the patented Paperlock technology
Leveraging the patented Paperlock technology, all Ecova packaging is heat-sealed and designed to run on existing flexible packaging equipment without requiring significant changes to packaging operations. This solution is compatible with vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal machines as well as pouching equipment. Ecova packaging is available in roll stock or pre-made pouch formats, helping brands transition to paper-based formats while minimizing operational disruption.

Recyclability verification is in progress.
Can Ecova Barrier be recycled at the roadside?
Wilson explained, “Rapids Paper + Packaging is currently validating the Ecova Barrier through Western Michigan University’s testing protocol for Part 1 recyclability and Part 2 repulpability. This work is not yet complete, so we cannot currently confirm whether Ecova Barrier can be recycled curbside like paper. The team’s goal is to design for maximum compatibility with existing recycling systems. Once testing is complete, we will share the results and appropriate claim language.”
Strong interest in the brand
Meanwhile, the brand has shown considerable interest in paper packaging.
Wilson stated, “We are seeing strong interest from brands across various market segments as they explore the transition to paper-based packaging. However, their sustainability goals must not come at the expense of product protection. This expansion of the Ecova platform offers brands a practical path forward by combining heat sealability, compatibility with existing packaging equipment, and barrier performance in commercially available solutions. Together, these capabilities enable brands to reduce plastic usage by adopting paper-based packaging and advancing their sustainability and Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) objectives.”
Trial quantity available
Rapids Paper + Packaging provides very small quantities of Ecova Barrier to help customers evaluate the material.
Wilson pointed out, “For initial trials, we adjust orders based on the materials required for customer testing, rather than requiring standard commercial production volumes.” “The exact quantity depends on the grade and format, and we can scale up supply as the project progresses.”
