Let’s Talk About Lift By USA Mower Blades When buying replacement lawn mower blades, it is important to make sure the new blade has the same measurements as the old blade: length, width, center hole, etc. But one of the most commonly overlooked blade attributes is lift. Lift refers to the blades ability to pull grass clipping up into the deck and expel them for side discharge or bagging. This lift or suction is also used to keep grass clippings circulating under the deck for mulching. A blade’s lift will affect the final cut and the mower’s effectiveness. Blades with a higher lift require more power. Mowers that are not equipped with enough horsepower may have a hard time cutting grass with high lift blades. This will result in premature wear and tear on the mower engine and components as well as a less than perfect cut. Lift is determined by measuring the upward curve at each end of the blade. Blade lift is categorized as low, medium, high, and extra high. Lift can be determined by laying the blade on a flat surface and measuring the upturned edge of the blade. Low Lift – Under 3/4 in. These blade require less power, produce less noise and less dust, and increases equipment life. Best for sandy or dusty terrain where high lift and lots of suction are not required or wanted. Sand and dust sucked into the deck can prematurely wear the blades and equipment. Medium Lift – 3/4 in. to 15/16 in. Typically straight edge, standard discharge blade. Blades have slight upward angle on the edges. Great blades for use when horsepower is a concern. Produce medium lift but requires less horsepower than high lift blades. High Lift – 1 in. to 1-3/16 in. Best for bagging clippings. Blades have more pronounced angle on the corners to create more lift. Excellent for lifting grass to create that fresh-cut look. Requires more horsepower, especially when cutting tall or dense grass. Not recommended for sandy or dusty soil conditions. Sand and dust sucked into the deck will accelerate wear on the blades and equipment. Extra High Lift – 1-1/4 in. and up. Produces the most suction. Best for cutting tall and compact grass but requires the most horsepower of all the blades on the market. Not recommended for sandy or dusty soil conditions. Sand and dust sucked into the deck will accelerate wear on the blades and equipment.
