Currently, several common rust removal methods in modern industry include high-pressure water jet rust removal, acid pickling rust removal, circulating acid pickling, ultrasonic rust removal, laser rust removal, and abrasive blasting.
Abrasive blasting has various disadvantages and is still widely used in corrosion-resistant engineering. Abrasive blasting technology refers to the method of using abrasives of certain specifications (such as quartz sand, river sand, iron sand, steel shot, etc.) under a certain air pressure to be blasted onto the surface of steel, utilizing the hardness, impact toughness, and angularity of the abrasives to remove rust from the steel surface. This method provides a higher rust removal quality and better surface roughness compared to other rust removal methods, and it has a higher efficiency for large equipment. However, its disadvantages include significant dust pollution to the environment, severe health hazards to operators, long-term use of this method can damage the surface of the hull, as abrasives generally cannot be recycled, affecting other operations, and the site cleanup can be troublesome. In some European and American countries, waste discharge standards are quite strict; for example, waste sand and stones after abrasive blasting need to be paid for disposal (burial). Due to the heavy environmental pollution caused by abrasive blasting, its use has been gradually restricted internationally, and some countries strictly prioritize environmental protection and personnel safety, explicitly prohibiting the application of abrasive blasting in ship rust removal.
High-pressure water jet rust removal can be divided into two categories: pure high-pressure water and abrasive jet.
High-pressure water and abrasive jet rust removal is a rust removal technology developed in recent years, which, due to its environmental protection characteristics, has fundamentally changed the dust pollution problem of dry abrasive blasting and improved rust removal efficiency, thus gaining more widespread application both domestically and internationally.
Application of high-pressure water jet systems in the shipbuilding industry
(1)Shipbuilding

Working principle of high-pressure water rust removal
Ultra-high pressure cleaning machines use high-pressure pumps to increase ordinary water pressure to 170~ 250MPa of ultra-high pressure, and then quickly spray it out through nozzles. The water jet forms a highly concentrated energy stream, with a speed nearly three times that of sound, impacting and grinding the metal surface being cleaned. The rust layer, scale, etc., are mostly distributed in layers or porous forms; once the scale layer is penetrated, the ultra-high pressure water jet wedges itself between the scale layer and the metal surface. When its impact energy and wedging force exceed the adhesion limit strength between the scale layer and the substrate, the rust and scale layers are removed.
The cleaning of objects by high-pressure water jets is transmitted to the surface of the object in the form of force, resulting in destruction through several actions:
(1)Cavitation damage;
(2)Impact of water jets;
(3)Dynamic pressure effects of water jets;
(4)Fatigue damage caused by water jet pulse loads;
(5)Water wedge effects, etc.
