Polyphenylene sulfide (PPS) is a high-performance engineering thermoplastic known for its excellent mechanical, thermal, and chemical properties. It has a simple molecular structure with alternating benzene rings and sulfur atoms, providing both rigidity and flexibility. PPS features high crystallinity (55%-65%), making it a white powder polymer with superior heat resistance (up to 240°C continuous use), mechanical strength, flame retardancy, chemical resistance, electrical properties, and dimensional stability. It is self-extinguishing and meets UL94V-0 ratings, maintaining good electrical performance even at high temperatures. PPS has excellent flowability during molding, resulting in minimal shrinkage and surface defects. It bonds well with various inorganic fillers. To enhance its physical and mechanical properties and heat resistance (heat deflection temperature), reinforcement materials include glass fibers, carbon fibers, aramid fibers, and metal fibers, primarily glass fibers. Inorganic fillers consist of talc, kaolin, calcium carbonate, silica, molybdenum disulfide, etc. Commercialized PPS alloys like PPS/PTFE, PPS/PA, and PPS/PPO improve PPS's brittleness, lubricity, and corrosion resistance, with PPS/PA being a high-toughness alloy. Glass fiber-reinforced PPS offers outstanding thermal stability, wear resistance, and creep resistance, exhibiting excellent mechanical and electrical properties over a wide range of temperatures, humidity, and frequencies. It has low dielectric constant and low dielectric loss. Key characteristics of PPS include: 1. General Properties: PPS appears as a white, highly crystalline, hard, and brittle polymer. Its density is around 1.3 g/cm³ but can increase after modification. PPS has an extremely low moisture absorption rate of about 0.3%. It is highly flame-retardant, with an oxygen index exceeding 44%, ranking among the highest in plastics (pure PPS has an oxygen index of 47%). 2. Mechanical Properties: Pure PPS has relatively low mechanical strength, especially impact strength. However, glass fiber reinforcement significantly improves impact strength from 27 J/m to 76 J/m and tensile strength from 6 MPa to 137 MPa. PPS exhibits exceptional rigidity, with a flexural modulus of up to 3.8 GPa for pure PPS, which can reach 12.6 GPa with inorganic filler modification. PPS also shows excellent creep resistance under load, high hardness, and wear resistance, with a wear rate of only 0.04g after 1000 revolutions. Adding PTFE and molybdenum disulfide further enhances these properties. PPS also possesses self-lubricating properties, and its mechanical properties are less sensitive to temperature changes. 3. Thermal Properties: PPS has outstanding thermal performance, capable of short-term exposure to 260°C and long-term use at 200-240°C. Its heat resistance is comparable to polyimide (PI) and second only to PTFE among thermoplastics, which is rare even among thermosetting plastics.
