Detailed Introduction to the Excellent Properties of Ultra-high Molecular Weight Polyethylene Non-standard Parts:
Extremely high wear resistance, impact resistance, very low friction coefficient, good self-lubricating properties, excellent low-temperature resistance, and chemical corrosion resistance, etc.
1. High wear resistance. One remarkable property of high molecular weight polyethylene is its extremely high wear resistance, which is very valuable in many engineering applications. Among all plastics, it has the best wear resistance, even better than many metal materials (such as carbon steel, stainless steel, bronze, etc.). As the molecular weight of polyethylene increases, this material becomes increasingly wear-resistant.
2. Extremely high impact resistance. The impact strength of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets is related to its molecular weight. When the molecular weight is below 2 million, the impact strength increases with molecular weight until it reaches a peak around 2 million; beyond this peak, increasing the molecular weight actually decreases the impact strength. This is due to the molecular chains significantly hindering its crystalline behavior, resulting in large amorphous regions that can absorb more impact energy.
Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene still has excellent impact resistance at low temperatures of -40°C, and even at liquid helium temperatures of -269°C, it can maintain good impact resistance. This excellent low-temperature characteristic extends the application of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene into low-temperature engineering fields.
3. Very low friction coefficient. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is highly wear-resistant, has a low friction coefficient, and good self-lubricating properties, making it an ideal material for bearing sleeves, sliding blocks, and liners. Using ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene as friction components in equipment not only improves wear life but also achieves energy-saving effects.
4. Good chemical corrosion resistance. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has good chemical corrosion resistance; except for concentrated nitric acid, it is not corroded by all alkaline and acidic solutions and can be used in concentrated solutions at temperatures of 80°C, remaining stable in <20% nitric acid and <75% in other acids. It is also very stable against water and liquid detergents.
However, ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets are prone to swelling in aromatic or halogenated compounds (especially at higher temperatures), so special attention should be paid during application.
5. Very low water absorption. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has a very low water absorption rate; it is almost water-resistant and does not swell in water, significantly lower than nylon.
6. Thermal properties. According to ASTM (load 4.6kg/cm2) method measurement, the heat distortion temperature is 85°C. Under minimal load, the service temperature can reach 90°C. In special cases, it can be used at higher temperatures. Because ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is a highly tough material, its low-temperature performance is also excellent, maintaining certain ductility at -269°C without signs of brittleness.
7. Electrical performance. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene has excellent electrical performance over a wide temperature range, with a volume resistivity of 10-18CM, breakdown voltage of 50KV/mm, and a dielectric constant of 2.3. Its electrical performance changes very little over a broad range of temperatures and frequencies. It is very suitable for use as structural materials in electrical engineering and equipment in paper mills.
8. Non-toxicity. Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene is odorless, non-toxic, and non-corrosive, with physiological cyclicity and adaptability. It is permitted by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for use in applications involving food and pharmaceuticals.
