Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene engineering plastic is a miraculous engineering plastic that possesses excellent properties such as lightweight, impact resistance, wear resistance, corrosion resistance, UV resistance, aging resistance, low friction coefficient, non-toxicity, pollution-free, not easily adhered by foreign substances, vibration and shock absorption, and noise reduction. It is a material that can replace metal materials such as steel, aluminum, and copper. Various products made from this material can directly replace metal products without changing the original design dimensions. The strength, rigidity, fatigue resistance, and other properties meet the requirements.
The nine major characteristics of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets:
• (1) Self-lubrication Ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets (UHMWPE) have an extremely low friction coefficient (0.05-0.11), thus exhibiting excellent self-lubrication. The dynamic friction coefficient of UHMWPE under water lubrication conditions is half that of PA66 and POM, and under dry conditions, it is only second to the self-lubricating plastic PTFE; when working in sliding or rotating forms, it has better lubrication than steel and brass with lubricating oil.
• (2) Non-stickiness The surface adhesion of ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene sheets (UHMWPE) is very weak, and its anti-adhesion capability is only second to the non-stick PTFE among plastics, making it difficult for the product surface to adhere to other materials.
• (3) Hydrophobicity UHMWPE has a very low water absorption rate, generally less than 0.01%, only 1% of PA6, so it usually does not require drying treatment before molding and processing.
• (4) Wear resistance UHMWPE has the highest wear resistance among plastics, exceeding that of certain metals. Compared to other engineering plastics, the mortar wear index of UHMWPE is only 1/5 of PA66, and 1/10 of HDPE and PVC; compared to metals, it is 1/7 that of carbon steel and 1/27 that of brass. Such high wear resistance makes it difficult to test its wear level using common plastic wear testing methods, leading to the design of a special mortar wear testing device. The wear resistance of UHMWPE is proportional to its relative molecular weight; the higher the relative molecular weight, the better the wear resistance.
• (5) Impact resistance The impact strength of UHMWPE ranks among the top in all engineering plastics, being about twice that of impact-resistant PC, five times that of ABS, and over ten times that of POM and PBTP. Its high impact strength makes it difficult to break using conventional impact testing methods. The impact strength increases with the increase of relative molecular weight, reaching a maximum at 1.5 million, and then gradually decreasing as the relative molecular weight continues to increase. Notably, it maintains excellent impact strength even at liquid nitrogen temperatures (-196℃), and its surface hardness increases after repeated impacts.
• (6) Acid and alkali resistance Apart from strong oxidizing acids, it can withstand various corrosive media (acids, alkalis, salts) and organic media (except naphthalene solvents) within certain temperature and concentration ranges.
• (7) Shock energy absorption The shock energy absorption value is high among all plastics, providing excellent noise damping and sound insulation effects.
• (8) Low-temperature resistance It exhibits outstanding low-temperature performance, remaining ductile at liquid nitrogen temperatures (-269℃), making it suitable for use as low-temperature components in the nuclear industry.
• (9) Sanitary and non-toxic Fully compliant with the standards of the Japan Sanitation Association, and recognized by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the U.S. Department of Agriculture, it can be used in contact with food and drugs.
