Composite geomembrane is a geosynthetic impermeable material made of polyethylene (Polyethylene or Polythene, abbreviated as PE) or polyvinyl chloride (Polyvinyl chloride, abbreviated as PVC) plastic film as the impermeable substrate, combined with non-woven fabric through heat pressing or adhesive bonding. It features high tensile strength, tear resistance, puncture resistance, strong extensibility, corrosion resistance, low-temperature resistance, good frost resistance, lightweight, ease of construction, and low cost. It can prevent puncture and damage that would compromise its impermeability. Additionally, it can drain water from the back of the membrane to prevent uplift and sliding instability caused by water vapor, enhancing the friction coefficient between sand and gravel, making it an ideal impermeable material. The composite geomembrane impermeability technology is widely used in water conservancy projects such as reservoirs, dam bodies, cofferdams, channels, and artificial lakes. It also has extensive applications in impermeability engineering in fields such as railways, highways, tunnels, urban construction, agriculture, and mining. The impermeability performance of composite geomembrane is one of the important indicators in impermeability engineering applications. The determination of the impermeability performance of composite geomembrane is conducted through a permeability test under a certain hydraulic pressure head. Under specified hydraulic pressure differences, the flow rate through the sample over a certain time and the sample thickness are used to obtain the permeability coefficient, calculated according to Darcy's law. The permeability coefficient range is as follows. Composite geomembranes perform significantly better than single membranes, offering more functions and ease of construction. When a hole occurs in a single membrane, it can lead to substantial leakage and loss of impermeability; however, after combining with a layer of geotextile, the tensile strength and puncture resistance are greatly enhanced, making the membrane less likely to be damaged during transportation and construction. In the event of a hole, the resistance of the geotextile can limit significant water leakage and ensure timely fault handling. The drainage function of the geotextile also allows for the smooth discharge of infiltrating water or pore water from the back of the membrane, eliminating potential sliding instability caused by reverse infiltration forces. Additionally, it increases the friction coefficient at the contact surface between the membrane and the dam body, leading to good contact. Therefore, composite geomembranes have unique impermeability advantages and a promising development prospect in various impermeability engineering applications.
