Versalis Partners With Acea Ambiente to Promote Circular Plastic Recycling
Versalis, the chemical company of Eni, and Acea Ambiente, a subsidiary of Acea, have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) in the field of integrated waste management and energy recovery. The MoU was signed by Versalis CEO Adriano Alfani and Acea Ambiente CEO Gabriele Di Cintio.
This agreement marks the beginning of the cooperation, which focuses on promoting the circular economy through joint recycling programs to recover value from post-consumer and post-industrial plastics.
Develop a comprehensive supply chain for high-quality recycled plastic production.
The two companies will jointly analyze and select waste streams from Acea Ambiente facilities to assess their suitability for Versalis's recycling process. The shared goal is to develop an integrated industrial supply chain capable of producing high-quality recycled plastics through potential investments in new plants and optimization of existing processes.
The agreement also provides for a joint evaluation of chemical recycling solutions (including Hoop® technology) to recover value from plastic waste that cannot be mechanically recycled.
Versalis CEO Adriano Alfani saidThis agreement strengthens our commitment to establishing a circular economy for plastics by combining our industrial and technological expertise with the specialized knowledge of strategic partners such as Acea Ambiente. In March last year, we launched a new plant at the Port of Magra that uses mechanical recycling raw materials to produce plastics, with an annual capacity of up to 20,000 tons of recycled general purpose polystyrene (r-GPPS) and expandable polystyrene (r-EPS). In Mantua, the Hoop® chemical recycling demonstration plant for mixed plastic waste has been operational for a month; an industrial-scale version (40,000 tons/year) will be built in Priolo as part of the Eni-Versalis chemical conversion program memorandum of understanding. Our goal is to establish more sustainable and scalable supply chains that add value to plastic waste and support the transition to a low-emission future.
Gabriele Di Cintio, CEO of Acea Ambiente, statedAcea Ambiente has long been committed to developing innovative and sustainable solutions. This agreement represents a strategic step towards an integrated industrial model for recovering value from plastic waste, making a tangible contribution to the country's circular economy while strengthening our role in ecological transition and the gradual decarbonization of industrial processes. The collaboration with Versalis combines our expertise in waste management and complex plant operations with that of a leading company in the chemical industry. Acea Ambiente operates an integrated network of sorting platforms and facilities dedicated to plastic recycling, which is a crucial resource for establishing an efficient and traceable supply chain. Our goal is to recover value from the most difficult-to-process plastics, produce high-quality secondary raw materials, and reduce the overall environmental impact.
