US Notifies India of Proposed 50% Tariff
On August 25th local time, the U.S. Department of Homeland Security issued a notice of intent to impose a 50% tariff on Indian goods starting from midnight on August 27th.
According to Bloomberg, the notice indicated that tariffs will apply to "all imported Indian goods intended for consumption or withdrawal from storage for consumption."
The U.S. will increase tariffs on India, raising the overall tariff rate to 50%.
On August 6, U.S. President Trump signed an executive order to impose an additional 25% tariff on Indian products exported to the United States, citing India’s "direct or indirect import of Russian oil" as the reason. The announcement stated that, except for certain exceptions, the new tariff measures will take effect 21 days after the executive order is issued.
According to the executive order signed by Trump on July 31, the United States will impose a 25% tariff on goods imported from India starting August 7. Combined with the additional tariffs announced on the 6th, goods imported from India to the United States will be subject to an overall tariff rate of 50%.
In response, India stated that the U.S. imposition of tariffs on India is "unfair, unjust, and unreasonable," and that India will "take all necessary measures" to safeguard its national interests.
