Trump Wields Tariff Stick Again, Affecting Heavy Trucks, Furniture, and Pharmaceuticals, with a Maximum of 100%
U.S. President Trump waved the tariff stick again on Thursday, announcing tariff measures on various imported products. This is the latest action in his escalation of global trade tensions.
According to comprehensive reports from CCTV News and other media, on September 25 local time, U.S. President Trump announced on his social media platform "Truth Social" that...Starting October 1, the United States will implement a new round of high tariffs on various imported products. The measures include a 25% tariff on all imported heavy trucks; a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom sinks, and related building materials; a 30% tariff on imported furniture; and a 100% tariff on patented and branded drugs.。
On that day, Trump posted three consecutive messages on "Truth Social" announcing the series of tariff measures mentioned above.
In his first post, Trump announced tariffs on imported heavy trucks.
"To protect our great heavy truck manufacturers from unfair external competition, I will impose a 25% tariff on all heavy (large) trucks manufactured in other parts of the world starting from October 1, 2025!" Trump wrote, adding that this move will benefit companies such as Peterbilt, Kenworth, and Freightliner.
"For many reasons, we need our truck drivers to be financially healthy and strong, but most importantly, for national security!" he added.
In another post, Trump announced tariffs on products such as kitchen cabinets and imported furniture.
"The reason for this is the large-scale influx of these products from other countries into the United States. This is a very unfair practice, but for reasons of national security and others, we must protect our manufacturing processes. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" Trump wrote.
In his latest post about tariffs, Trump pointed the finger at patents and brand-name drugs.
"Starting from October 1, 2025, we will impose a 100% tariff on any brand-name or patented drugs, unless a company is building their pharmaceutical factory in the United States. 'IS BUILDING' will be defined as 'breaking ground' and/or 'under construction.' Therefore, if construction has already begun, no tariffs will be imposed on these drugs. Thank you for your attention to this matter!" wrote Trump.
Heavy trucks, furniture, and pharmaceuticals are the latest industries targeted by Trump's tariff agenda. Since the beginning of this year, several major sectors, including automobiles, electronics, and metals, have already faced high tariffs.
Trump's latest tariff measures are the latest blow to America's allies. Reportedly, the top five sources of truck imports to the United States are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland; while the largest sources of pharmaceutical imports to the U.S. include Ireland, Germany, Switzerland, and India.
During his second term, Trump initiated several national security investigations that could impose new tariffs on various products, paralyzing corporate decision-making and casting a shadow over the global economic outlook.
On September 24, local time, the official website of the Bureau of Industry and Security of the U.S. Department of Commerce published two Federal Register notices, announcing the initiation of Section 232 investigations on September 2 regarding imported robots and industrial machinery, as well as imported medical equipment. This is seen as a prelude to Trump taking tariff action on these industries.
