Toyota to Launch Self-Developed Home Electric Vehicle Charger in Japan
According to a report by Nikkei, Japanese automaker Toyota plans to launch a home charger specifically designed for its electric vehicles in Japan as early as this fall. Toyota believes that providing a dedicated charger will help promote the adoption of its electric vehicles.

Toyota has developed a charger with an output power of 6 kilowatts, which is twice the power of similar products from other companies. It will be compatible with its pure electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid vehicles. This charger can provide a full charge in 8 hours, expected to meet the range requirement of 300 kilometers for the vehicle. In everyday use scenarios, users can charge overnight and have a fully charged vehicle by the next morning.
According to reports, the price of this charger is expected to reach approximately 200,000 yen (about $1,350). If users purchase a rechargeable vehicle and simultaneously select this charger, they will receive 100,000 yen in points, which can be used to purchase car accessories at Toyota or Daihatsu Motor dealerships. The maintenance of this charger will be handled by the dealers, while the installation service will be outsourced to construction companies. Previously, dealers under the Toyota Group mainly sold chargers produced by Denso and Panasonic.
In 2023, the Toyota Motor Group's brands, Toyota and Lexus, sold nearly 3,000 electric vehicles, but since then, the group's electric vehicle sales have continued to decline. Although the group's lineup of plug-in hybrid vehicles has expanded, sales of these models in the first half of 2025 were only about 10,000 units. Insufficient charging infrastructure is considered one of the reasons for the group's sluggish electric vehicle sales.
Toyota plans to launch a revamped RAV4 SUV and an upgraded version of the bZ4X electric vehicle this fall. As a global strategic model for Toyota, the RAV4 will no longer offer a gasoline version after this update, retaining only the hybrid and plug-in hybrid variants.
Toyota believes that bundling its self-developed chargers with the sale of new cars can help attract customers to continue choosing its pure electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles in the future. Among Toyota's electric vehicle competitors, American electric car company Tesla has already adopted the "vehicle + self-developed charger" bundling sales model in Japan. Meanwhile, fellow Japanese car companies Honda and Nissan primarily sell third-party brand chargers, including products from Panasonic.
