The Most Powerful Golf R in History May Feature a 2.5T Engine
Recently, it has been learned from relevant channels that the Volkswagen Group plans to launch a high-performance version of the Golf R equipped with a 2.5T five-cylinder turbocharged engine in 2027 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the R sub-brand. This engine is reportedly derived from the Audi RS3, with a maximum power expected to exceed 400hp, making the new car the most powerful Golf model in history.
In fact, as early as 2020, there were rumors that the Golf R would be equipped with the “EA855” five-cylinder engine, but this was not realized due to internal coordination issues within the group. As time has passed, the situation has changed. According to foreign media reports, after being fitted with the new 2.5T five-cylinder engine, the vehicle’s curb weight has only increased by about 25kg. Engineers will also reinforce the braking system and body structure to match the enhanced performance.
In terms of the transmission system, the new car is expected to offer only the upgraded 7-speed DSG dual-clutch gearbox, with the manual version not making a return. Meanwhile, Volkswagen may equip it with Audi’s rear-axle torque splitter to further enhance dynamic performance. If this configuration is implemented, the new car is expected to challenge the Nürburgring record for the fastest production Volkswagen model. Currently, this record is held by the Golf GTI Edition 50, with a lap time of 7 minutes 46.13 seconds.
With the EU's ban on fuel-powered vehicles approaching, Volkswagen plans to mark the end of fuel-powered Golf models with this car. The ninth-generation Golf has been confirmed to transition to pure electric, while the current fuel-powered version may continue production until around 2030. Therefore, this Golf R equipped with a five-cylinder engine not only symbolizes performance but is also regarded as Volkswagen's tribute to the classic powertrain. Car Quality Network will continue to follow and report more information about the new car.
