Tariff Surprise! Trump Announces: Effective October 14!
On September 29 local time, U.S. President Trump announced a 10% tariff on imported softwood logs and lumber, as well as a 25% tariff on imported cabinets, bathroom vanities, and upholstered wood products. The new tariffs will take effect on October 14, and some rates will be further increased starting January 1 of next year.
On September 25, Trump announced on his social media platform "Truth Social" that starting from October 1, the United States will implement a new round of high tariffs on various imported products. The measures include: a 50% tariff on kitchen cabinets, bathroom sinks, and related building materials; a 30% tariff on imported furniture; and a 100% tariff on patented and branded pharmaceuticals.
Trump stated, "Starting from October 1, 2025, we will impose a 100% tariff on all branded or patented drugs unless the related companies set up pharmaceutical plants in the United States." On the same day, he also announced that a 25% tariff would be imposed on all imported heavy trucks starting from October 1.
The news once triggered a sharp decline in pharmaceutical stocks. On September 26, local time, the White House stated that the latest tariff measures on drugs do not apply to countries that have already reached trade agreements with the United States. According to Reuters, White House officials said that for trade partners such as the European Union and Japan, the U.S. will continue to adhere to the 15% tariff cap stipulated in the agreements.
According to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, due to the impact of tariff policies, furniture prices in the U.S. market in August 2025 increased by 4.7% year-over-year.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce previously urged the U.S. government not to impose new tariffs on heavy trucks. The Chamber pointed out that the top five sources of heavy truck imports to the U.S. are Mexico, Canada, Japan, Germany, and Finland, stating that "these countries are either U.S. allies or close partners and do not pose a threat to U.S. national security."
On September 29, local time, Trump posted on the social media platform "Truth Social" that the American film industry has been "stolen from the United States by other countries," just like "taking candy from a baby."
Trump stated that California's governor is "weak and incompetent" and has been hit particularly hard. To address this "long-standing and never-ending" problem, a 100% tariff will be imposed on all movies made outside the United States.
On May 4th, local time, Trump stated on social media that he would authorize the U.S. Department of Commerce and the U.S. Trade Representative to immediately initiate procedures to impose a 100% tariff on all movies made abroad that enter the United States. This move has raised concerns among U.S. film industry professionals and related experts.
On August 29, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit ruled that the law invoked by Trump to impose tariffs on multiple countries did not grant him the authority to levy taxes. On the evening of September 3, the Trump administration submitted documents to the U.S. Supreme Court, requesting an expedited overturn of this ruling. The U.S. Supreme Court previously announced that it would swiftly review the legality of the tariffs imposed by the Trump administration, with oral arguments scheduled for the first week of November.
