Scottish Startup Raises Series A Funding For New Plastic Recycling System Project
On September 8, Specialty Plastics World cited Scottish Enterprise, stating that ReVentas has secured Series A funding from multiple venture capital firms and Scotland's national economic development agency. The funds will be used to build a factory to aid in the recycling of the two most produced plastics—polyethylene and polypropylene.
These two types of plastics account for more than 50% of the total global plastic production.
ReVentas has developed a chemical recycling system that breaks down plastics, removes contaminants, colors, and odors, and then converts them into plastics that are just as useful to consumers as newly produced plastics.
Plastic pollution is a widespread global problem, largely because petroleum-based plastic products cannot naturally degrade. Instead, they break down into increasingly smaller fragments, known as microplastics, which have been linked to numerous health and environmental issues.
The recycling of polyethylene and polypropylene is particularly difficult because they are not easy to recycle. Compared to other types of plastics, polypropylene especially requires specialized recycling facilities, while polyethylene often becomes increasingly brittle during recycling.
If ReVentas' system can be scaled up to a commercial level, it will more effectively promote widespread plastic recycling while reducing the production of new plastic, thereby bringing dual environmental benefits.
Tom Ross, CEO of ReVentas, stated: "This investment is an important milestone in the development of ReVentas and also promotes the advancement of plastic recycling."
Plastic is an important part of our world, but so far, the plastics industry has not provided large-scale, practical solutions to address the environmental impact of plastics. The simple solution offered by ReVentas will change this situation, ensuring that the waste we generate today can and will be directly used in the products we purchase tomorrow.
