Raw Material Shortage Prompts South Korea To Encourage Eco-Friendly Products And Reduce Plastic Consumption

Due to the Middle East conflict, the supply of key raw materials for plastic production in South Korea has become tight. On the 13th, the South Korean Ministry of Environment, Climate and Energy launched a six-month nationwide campaign to encourage people to reduce plastic consumption.
According to Korea Business Wire on the 13th, participants can register via an online recycling platform and pledge to abide by nine guidelines aimed at reducing the use of plastic products. These guidelines include using reusable cups, shopping bags, and takeout containers; avoiding single-use cutlery and plastic straws; and purchasing products made from recycled materials. The government also encourages participants to minimize unnecessary packaging and to sort waste correctly.
A report said that to encourage public participation, the South Korean government will provide environmental products and electronic coupons through a lottery system. Officials said even small changes can make a significant impact. If each resident reduces plastic usage equivalent to one disposable cup per day, South Korean households could reduce their plastic waste by about 10% annually.
Since the outbreak of the war in the Middle East, the shortage of key raw materials such as naphtha has affected multiple sectors in South Korea. A "buying spree" for designated garbage bags has emerged, with some large supermarkets and convenience stores implementing price hikes and purchase restrictions. Medical supplies made from plastic, such as syringes and infusion bags, as well as agricultural films, are also facing shortages.
