Qualcomm is kicked out! It's reported that the entire iPhone 18 series will be equipped with self-developed basebands.
On March 28, news broke that a blogger, Dingjiao Digital, revealed that Apple is very likely to adopt an entirely self-developed solution next year.Including baseband chips, Bluetooth chips, Wi-Fi chips, etc., completely abandon the two companies (Broadcom + Qualcomm).
According to the revelations,The iPhone 18 series will be the first to feature Apple's C2 baseband chip (the iPhone 16e will debut the C1). Compared to the C1, the C2 supports mmWave, addressing the shortcomings of the previous generation.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo stated that for Apple, supporting millimeter wave is not particularly difficult, but achieving stable connections while maintaining low power consumption remains a significant challenge. He also mentioned that unlike processors, Apple's self-developed baseband chips will not adopt advanced process technology, as the return on investment is not high. Therefore, it is unlikely that next year's Apple baseband chips will use a 3nm process.
In addition, the iPhone 18 series will be equipped with Apple's self-developed Wi-Fi 7 chip, replacing Broadcom. Analysts say that the design of Apple's Wi-Fi 7 chip was finalized as early as the first half of 2024, and its commercial release will have a significant impact on Broadcom's performance.
According to the information, Apple's preference for self-developed chips and reducing external procurement costs has long been a routine. Historically, it is not uncommon for Apple to develop its own chips, with the A series used for mobile computing and the M series for computer products having undergone iterations for many years. After achieving self-sufficiency in baseband chips and Wi-Fi chips this time, the performance of Broadcom and Qualcomm will be affected.
