Petronas Successfully Delivers Malaysia's First Batch of Sustainable Aviation Fuel
Petronas recently announced that it has successfully delivered Malaysia's first batch of blended sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) to Malaysia Aviation Group (MAG) at Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA), marking its ability to locally supply SAF on a continuous basis.
This batch of SAF, certified by the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC) and compliant with the Carbon Offsetting and Reduction Scheme for International Aviation (CORSIA) standards, was produced by Petronas at its local blending facility. It was then delivered directly to Kuala Lumpur International Airport via the multi-product pipeline of Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd (MRCSB), achieving an integrated supply chain.
Ahmad Adly Alias, Vice President of Refining, Marketing & Trading at Petronas, stated: "SAF is one of the most immediate solutions for decarbonizing the aviation industry. This pilot project represents a long-term strategic investment by the company through technology upgrades, infrastructure development, and talent cultivation, aiming to provide our partners with a reliable and cost-optimized decarbonization pathway."
He added, “This achievement not only supports the government in achieving the SAF goals set out in the 13th Malaysia Plan, but also demonstrates our commitment to national energy security and industry growth.”
This batch of SAF is set to be used for Malaysia Airlines' MH2 flights from Kuala Lumpur to London every evening from September 1 to 16, 2025, marking the official integration of SAF into Malaysia Airlines' regular operations.
Philip See, Chief Sustainability Officer of Malaysia Airlines Group, stated: "Every flight using SAF demonstrates that aviation decarbonization is not a distant vision, but an achievable action today. The industry needs to strengthen collaboration to scale up SAF production, improving its economy and availability."
Kuala Lumpur International Airport, as Malaysia's main airport, will support the expansion of the SAF supply chain, helping the aviation industry meet CORS requirements. Malaysia Airports Holdings Berhad Managing Director Mohd Izani Ghani stated, "The introduction of locally blended SAF is a crucial step in the airport's carbon neutrality process. We are working with partners to build a sustainable airport ecosystem to support the national net-zero vision."
This breakthrough confirms Petronas's full-chain SAF supply capability, from global procurement and certification to local blending and distribution, fully complying with international sustainability standards.
