2. Effective from September 1! Thailand Issues Mercury Ban, Including Prohibition of Mercury-Catalyzed Polyurethane Production
On August 10, Thai Industry Minister Ekana Pongpan announced that the "Announcement on Prohibiting the Establishment and Expansion of Factories Using Mercury and Mercury Compounds in Production Processes, and Prohibiting the Use of Mercury and Mercury Compounds in Production Processes (2025)" has been officially signed and promulgated. The announcement, which was formally implemented after the cabinet's in-principle approval on December 24, 2024, aims to fulfill Thailand's international commitments under the Minamata Convention, control and phase out the use and emission of mercury from the source, and protect public health and the ecological environment. The announcement will take effect on September 1, 2025.
According to the content of the announcement, the ban covers the whole country and applies to five categories of industrial production processes: chlor-alkali production; acetaldehyde production using mercury and mercury compounds as catalysts; vinyl chloride monomer production; production of sodium/potassium methylate or ethylate using mercury as a catalyst; and polyurethane production using mercury as a catalyst.
