Netherlands Pilot Launched! Medical Plastics Achieve “Recycling - Regeneration - Reapplication” Full Loop
Introduction: The Netherlands' recycling pilot project collects uncontaminated plastic waste at Zuyderland Medical Center. After being transported by a professional carrier, the waste is sent to Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (Sabic) to be transformed into new polyethylene raw materials through advanced recycling technology. The certified circular materials produced are now applied in two types of medical scenarios.

Sabic and Zuyderland have initiated a collaboration to test whether certain hospital plastics can re-enter the medical supply chain. The focus of the trial is on plastics that have not come into contact with patients, blood, or bodily fluids, thereby avoiding contamination risks. The partners include Coveris, Ace, Artivion, and Mölnlycke, forming a complete value chain from collection to final use.
Two new healthcare solutions
Two applications use certified circular polyethylene attributed to mass balance. Coveris produces packaging for Artivion's vascular guidewires, with 25% of the content attributed to recycled medical waste. Mölnlycke's surgical drapes contain 49% hospital-generated plastic waste and incorporate Ace's material components.
Maastricht University is supporting the initiative and has received Interreg EU funding for a three-year project to help drive the "circular transformation of the health and care system in the Meuse-Rhine region," with partners including Sabic and Zuyderland.
