Mitsubishi Chemical's bio-based polycarbonate (PC) used for breakage-resistant packaging of injection vials
Mitsubishi Chemical Group's plant-based biobased engineering plastic “DURABIO™” has been adopted for the breakage-resistant packaging (cups) of vials by Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. Starting from November 2024, shipments of this packaging product have begun. In the future, Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. plans to gradually expand the use of this material to other products that employ breakage-resistant packaging.
DURABIO™ is a biobased engineering plastic made using the renewable plant-derived raw material “isosorbide.” It not only reduces dependence on non-renewable petroleum resources but also helps to reduce greenhouse gas emissions as plants absorb carbon dioxide during their growth. The material boasts excellent impact resistance, scratch resistance, transparency, and colorability, making it widely used in various fields such as automotive interior and exterior parts, optical and electronic device components, and daily necessities.
Daiichi Sankyo Co., Ltd. is committed to reducing the environmental impact of its packaging through the promotion of appropriate packaging suitable for actual uses and by reducing plastic usage. DURABIO™ was selected due to its superior properties, including being plant-based, transparent (easy to see through), and having high impact resistance (to protect the bottles).
