LYB announces Houston propylene expansion project
Liandebasel 2025-03-27 13:47:45

LYB recently announced plans to invest in expanding its propylene production capacity at the Channelview complex located near Houston.

The project is scheduled to commence construction in the third quarter of 2025, with production expected to begin by the end of 2028. The facility is expected to produce approximately 400,000 tons of propylene annually, providing 750 temporary jobs during the peak construction period, and is anticipated to create 25 long-term jobs once production starts.

Kim Foley

Executive Vice President of Global Olefins, Polyolefins, and Refining at LYB

"This capacity expansion enhances our ability to meet the growing demands of our customers and improves our self-sufficiency, further developing and upgrading LYB's core business. In addition, this project reduces our dependence on market fluctuations, allowing LYB to provide shareholders with consistent and stable returns."

The new reaction device will utilize olefin metathesis technology to convert ethylene into propylene, which will further be used to produce polypropylene and propylene oxide. These are essential basic materials in daily life, widely used in industries such as food packaging, medical devices, automotive components, aircraft de-icing fluids, building insulation materials, home decor mats, and communication equipment.
