Japan Develops World's Largest Diamond Substrate: Plans to Commercialize by 2026
March 31 news, according to reports,Japanese precision component manufacturer Orbray has achieved a technological breakthrough by successfully developing the world's largest diamond substrate for electronic products, with specifications reaching 2 centimeters square. This innovative achievement provides new material solutions for cutting-edge fields such as power semiconductors and quantum computers.

In crystal growth technology, Orbray uses its self-developed 'special sapphire substrate' deposition process to improve the traditional step-flow growth method, achieving large-size preparation of diamond substrates with a 111 face truncation.
The key to this technology lies in the utilization of a specific angle substrate tilt design, which effectively alleviates internal stress during the growth process of diamond crystals, overcoming the technical bottleneck that has hindered the large-scale production of such substrates.
Currently, Orbray is actively promoting technological upgrades and plans to expand the substrate size to a diameter specification of 2 inches (about 5 centimeters).
According to the R&D schedule, the company is expected to complete the productization preparation before 2026, providing critical foundational materials for the manufacturing of next-generation electronic devices.
