How intelligent will future PCs be? AMD provides an innovative example
Donews 2025-03-27 17:19:11

At the AI PC Innovation Summit held on March 18 with the theme "ADVANCING AI," AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su delivered this opening speech, placing AI in a new position.

In recent days, the semiconductor industry has added two major topics. On one side, Jensen Huang, dressed in his iconic leather jacket, took the stage at the GTC 2025 conference to announce the next generation of chips. Just one day before his speech, Dr. Lisa Su appeared in Beijing, showcasing AMD's phased achievements in fully embracing AI PCs.

"In the past year, the use of AI has just exploded. I would say that AI is the most transformative technology in the past 50 years. AI really reshapes industries and our lives in ways we can't imagine."

As a global provider of computing power for PCs and one of the main promoters of AI PCs, AMD has recently launched major new products such as the Strix Halo mobile processor, RDNA 4 graphics card, and Ryzen 9 9950X3D. By hosting an AI PC Summit at this time, AMD is clearly responding to certain questions from the outside world: In the current trend towards AI PCs, what can AMD do?

After a year, DoNews and a group of media went to the scene, hearing and seeing tangible answers.

01.
AI Fully Implemented, Moving Towards Pragmatism

This year, reporters have particularly noticed at the scene that AMD has transitioned from being "abstract" to "practical" in the application layer. From initially just offering local content generation and Q&A functionalities, it has now progressed to solving problems, assisting with accounting budgets, and even game development, covering multiple fields such as entertainment, productivity, and everyday use.

Productivity is the core focus of implementation. In the "AI PC Creativity Without Limits" exhibition area, multiple AI applications such as RWKV music, Clear Heterogeneous Dream Painter, and Z-emotion showcased their AI-assisted functionalities across various processes, from music creation and video editing to model production.

Z-emotion is a platform focused on the fashion, gaming, and digital content industries, offering users AI-driven 3D fabric simulation and virtual try-on experiences. With these tools, creators can produce realistic, high-quality 3D assets more efficiently. Staff members have stated that even ordinary individuals can develop large-scale games using this platform, achieving the concept of one person becoming an entire team.

Zhiwo AI, as a domestic AI knowledge management product, also participated in this summit. After integrating the DeepSeek-R1 local model, Zhiwo AI optimized the efficiency of running large models on the client side based on the AMD Ryzen AI platform, making multimodal information processing and AI conversational knowledge retrieval smoother, thus achieving a more secure localized experience.

Field staff can generate a logical outline by simply inputting relevant concepts or keywords when using KnowMe AI. Then, by selecting a preferred template, they can obtain a relatively mature PPT presentation.

In the realm of entertainment, the iQIYI app has garnered significant attention. iQIYI has deeply optimized the viewing experience for its users by leveraging AMD's VSR technology, which allows real-time computation of low-resolution videos, bringing their actual playback resolution close to 4K. This enhancement improves the viewing experience for users watching older film and television resources, as well as videos under low internet speed conditions.

Topaz Labs Photo AI is an image processing software based on artificial intelligence technology, specializing in intelligent restoration and quality enhancement. It uses deep learning algorithms to automatically identify image issues and optimize details, such as enlarging low-resolution images, restoration, and facial enhancement.

In the field of programming, AMD AI PC also demonstrates powerful support. With the DeepSeek large model, AMD showcased an AI programming development environment application solution created using DeepSeek + VSCode. In this solution, even users with no programming experience can easily complete some simple programming tasks.

For example, players can easily create a "Nezha mini-game" using this development environment. In the game, players can control Nezha by tilting their body left or right or using the keyboard to dodge obstacles and collect "spirit orbs" to gain energy. This process is not only simple and easy to understand but also sparks users' creativity and interest in programming.

In the "Creative Live Studio" of the exhibition area, a company named Aimweisi is showcasing its creative concepts and content production for two programs ("The Shape of China" and "My Hometown Shines the Most") from the "2025 CCTV Network Spring Festival Gala" that it previously participated in.

Staff told DoNews that the company mainly produces AIGC application content, such as AI videos, AI images, and the AI "revival" of ancient artifacts. With sufficient computing power from AMD, various software can be supported, including power consumption control and local video optimization, among other features.

With the popularization of the AI PC concept, the entire ecosystem has undergone tremendous changes in the past year, and the PC market has ushered in a real transformation.

02.
"Trinity" Empowers AI PC

DoNews reporters learned on-site that many applications rely on local deployment, specifically utilizing local NPUs for operation.

This requires developers and chip providers to achieve perfect compatibility. If compatibility cannot be achieved, even if the application is installed on the computer, it will still rely on CPU resources during runtime. If the capability is insufficient, it will "fail to run."

Unlike its peers who only focus on CPU or GPU acceleration for AI computing solutions, AMD pushes the limits of CPU, GPU, and NPU simultaneously, making it the vendor with the most comprehensive AI acceleration technology in the industry today.

NPUs have become quite common in smartphones, serving as dedicated hardware accelerators specifically designed for AI and machine learning tasks. Unlike CPUs and GPUs, which act as more "general-purpose" computing processors, NPUs have a more specialized role. They can handle the complex calculations required by various deep learning algorithms, making them more efficient for AI tasks. Additionally, NPUs can work in tandem with CPUs and GPUs to address complex task demands, delivering faster processing speeds.

This is also why we can see so many applications at the booth, such as smart office, video production, game development, programming, AI search, all of which can carry the workload on the NPU instead of the CPU and GPU, thus not delaying the operation of other software workloads.

AMD's Ryzen 7040 series processors, released in early 2023, introduced an independent NPU to the x86 platform, officially ushering in the AI PC era. The initial NPU had a computing power of only 10 TOPS, but this year's widely released AI processors have seen that power soar to a high value of 55 TOPS.

AMD's CPUs and GPUs have also achieved more efficient and cost-effective coverage. A very typical example is that at this summit, AMD showcased the new AMD DeepSeek solution, which is an eight-card W7900/W7800 server solution based on the vLLM framework, capable of assisting enterprises in deploying the DeepSeek R1 671B model.

According to the introduction by the staff at the summit site, this solution is already being sold to many enterprises and can be locally deployed and customized based on the enterprises' needs. Its biggest advantage is cost-effectiveness. Specifically, a server solution configured with eight W7900/W7800 cards based on the vLLM framework is priced around 200,000 to 300,000 yuan, which is lower than servers equipped with NVIDIA graphics cards.

In other words, AMD provides a comprehensive AI acceleration computing hardware architecture in the industry through its "trinity" approach of CPU+GPU+NPU. From an application perspective, AMD's solution can cover the entire process of AI applications, from development to training to terminal inference.

03.
Open source is in AMD's DNA.

Open source is another key term mentioned by Lisa Su. She stated that open source is in AMD's DNA and a crucial factor in creating differentiated competition.

"ROCm is our open-source software platform. We have added a wealth of new features and functions to make it easier for customers to deploy our technology in their software environments. Today, we see that open source can truly accelerate the pace of innovation in artificial intelligence. We are committed to building an open and developer-friendly artificial intelligence ecosystem."

AMD Senior Vice President and President of Greater China, Sandy Pan, introduced that AMD AI PCs' ecological cooperation in China can be roughly divided into three areas.

  • First, Microsoft Windows 11, both parties cooperate to achieve in-depth collaboration optimization of hardware and software;
  • The second is to promptly embrace and support industry-leading models like DeepSeek, optimizing and adapting them.
  • III. China AI PC Application Innovation Alliance leverages the strength of numerous industry partners to make AI truly practical and implement it in various sectors.

For example, Microsoft showcased the leading features and innovative experiences brought by Windows 11 AI+ PCs at the summit, including real-time captions, Recall, enhanced search capabilities, studio effects, Click-to-do, and more.

When you want to create a City Walk guide for a friend who has come from afar but don't know where to start, you can use the review function (a landmark building, such as the "White Pagoda") to search, and the computer can quickly organize the information of the webpages you previously viewed. It is worth mentioning that the review function runs entirely on the computing power of the NPU and can be used normally even without an internet connection.

In the list of AI PC ecosystem partners announced by AMD in China, in addition to Microsoft, there are many influential AI software solution providers, including Evernote, Youdao, Yixin Shanhui, and Shutu. In other words, users on the AMD platform, especially the AMD Ryzen AI series platform, can already experience a large number of third-party "AI applications" that are natively adapted.

It is reported that since the launch of the China AI Application Innovation Alliance in March 2024, AMD's ISV (Independent Software Vendor) partners have exceeded 100 and are expected to reach 170 by the end of 2025. AMD is weaving a vast ecosystem network that will empower AI to enter various scenarios, efficiently serving our work and daily lives.

Over the past year, the buzzword "AI PC" has frequently appeared in the public eye, carrying people's aspirations for the future of personal computing devices. We often say that any AI ultimately needs to be applied in real-world scenarios. To put it simply, the true era of AI PCs will arrive when they strike a balance between "price-performance-scenarios."

Currently, AMD is driving the industry's accelerated development with a triple engine of "hardware + software + ecosystem." At this summit, there was less emphasis on "technology," while "ecosystem" and "application scenarios" took center stage, allowing people to tangibly experience the efficiency and user experience upgrades brought by AI PCs. It’s conceivable that as AI empowerment becomes increasingly efficient, manufacturers who embrace the ecosystem early will gain a first-mover advantage in capturing market share. Whoever can establish the AI PC ecosystem first will control the gateway to the next-generation computing platform.

At the same time, the industry has also experienced a warm breeze, with AI PCs bringing about a recovery in the global PC market. According to Gartner's statistical data, the global PC market shipments reached 245 million units in 2024, a year-on-year increase of 1.3%. Additionally, IDC's forecast data indicates that by 2027, AI PCs will account for 85% of the overall PC market, becoming the absolute mainstream in the PC market.

What is even more noteworthy is that this year's government work report first mentioned "artificial intelligence computers," clearly stating to "support the widespread application of large models, vigorously develop new generation smart terminals such as intelligent connected new energy vehicles, artificial intelligence smartphones and computers, intelligent robots, and smart manufacturing equipment." This statement undoubtedly increases market expectations for the AI PC industry.

As for how attractive AI PCs are to consumers, DoNews will continue to monitor the situation. However, today we can at least be certain that traditional computers are becoming a thing of the past, and the "application revolution" brought by AI PCs has already erupted.
