Google adjusts Android development strategy, source code release will continue.
Recently, Google sent a letter to its Chinese partners detailing changes to its internal processes regarding the Android development model. The letter emphasized that while some project development will be transferred to internal branches, Google will continue to release complete source code for all subsequent versions to AOSP (Android Open Source Project). This adjustment aims to optimize development efficiency and streamline processes.
According to the letter, starting from March 2025, Android platform development will focus on a single internal branch. The AOSP main branch will be set to read-only status, and CI builds and test coverage will cease to be updated, but CI builds for the release branch will continue to run. For partners, they can still access the latest AOSP or branch code through early access programs or collaboration agreements, and overall collaboration will remain unaffected.
It is worth noting that Android X, the common kernel branch, and the development of testing suites will still be retained in AOSP. Google has made it clear that this adjustment does not mean the Android system is becoming closed source; the source code release mechanism will remain unchanged. This move reflects Google's emphasis on enhancing R&D efficiency while still valuing the maintenance and expansion of the open-source ecosystem.
