Cortec Launches Certified Compostable 100% Biobased Packaging Film
Cortec has launched EcoWorks 100, a new type of packaging film that features both fully biobased components and industrial compostability. The film has been certified as an industrially compostable product by TÜV Austria (certificate number #TA8012509046) and contains 100% biobased content certified by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA).
EcoWorks 100 aims to enhance sustainability from the perspective of the entire product lifecycle. This film is made entirely from renewable materials, can be processed using conventional equipment, and at the end of its lifecycle, can naturally decompose in commercial composting facilities without leaving ecotoxic residues. Cortec reported that the ecotoxicity testing included a seed germination test: sunflower seeds planted in a substrate mixed 50:50 with standard compost and EcoWorks 100 degraded compost showed germination rates and early growth nearly identical to the control group. Samples containing 25% EcoWorks degraded compost also met the requirements of ASTM D6400.
The newly launched product expands Cortec's line of specialty bioplastics, which currently includes industrial compostable stretch films, shrink films, corrosion inhibiting films, and organic waste collection bags. With 100% biobased content and industrial compostability, EcoWorks 100 targets manufacturers and brands seeking fully renewable solutions, suitable for shopping bags, trash bags, and other commercially or industrially flexible packaging solutions that can be certified as compostable.
