Contemporary Amperex Technology Co. Limited (CATL) and the Ellen MacArthur Foundation announced a cooperation agreement aimed at accelerating the development of a battery circular economy. CATL has become a strategic partner in the foundation's network and is the first leading member from the renewable energy technology sector.

Looking to the future, CATL will be committed to fulfilling the commitment of global energy recycling, working hand in hand with the foundation to explore the circular economy opportunities across the entire value chain of batteries, and building a cross-industry partner ecosystem to jointly develop and implement the blueprint for battery recycling.

For a long time, the battery industry has been aware of the need to abandon the traditional "take-make-dispose" model, but turning commitments into concrete actions is not easy. The expertise contributed by CATL in this strategic partnership is crucial for establishing a genuine circular battery industry.

Sandy Song, the global head of circular economy at CATL, stated: "This strategic partnership is a significant step towards our shared vision of a sustainable energy future. By combining our expertise and innovation capabilities in the battery industry with the foundation's leadership in the circular economy, we have the ability to create a truly circular battery ecosystem. This is not only about environmental responsibility, but also about driving innovation and building a system that benefits industries and societies worldwide."

Joe Murphy, Executive Director of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation Network, pointed out: "The rapid development of renewable energy and electrification provides a unique opportunity for us to build a circular value chain from scratch. By practicing the concept of a circular economy, companies can recover valuable resources from first-generation technology products such as electric vehicles, rather than discarding them. As a leading global manufacturer of batteries for electric vehicles and energy storage systems, CATL's expertise is crucial for establishing a truly circular battery industry and promoting a broader energy transition to a circular economy."

Ningde Era Chief Sustainability Officer Jian Pan, while speaking at the annual network event of the foundation held in Amsterdam, Netherlands, emphasized the importance of considering recyclability at the battery design stage. Ningde Era has implemented a zero-carbon strategy, prioritizing the use of reusable and renewable materials, and promoting battery recycling. In 2024, Ningde Era recycled about 130,000 tons of used batteries, producing 17,000 tons of lithium salt.
