BMW Plans to Build Rugged SUV to Rival Mercedes G-Class
Recently, according to relevant sources, Car Quality Network has learned that BMW is planning to launch an all-new hardcore luxury SUV, directly targeting the Mercedes-Benz G-Class as its main competitor. The new vehicle is expected to be built on the same platform as the BMW X5, with the chassis code G74, and is expected to be produced at the Spartanburg plant in the United States in the second half of 2029.

It is worth mentioning that to celebrate the 25th anniversary of the X5, BMW launched a limited edition X5 Silver Anniversary Edition in 2024, with only 1,000 units produced. The model incorporates more off-road elements in its design and is equipped with the xOffroad package, including air suspension, a rear axle differential lock, and underbody protection plates. This move is regarded by the industry as an important signal of BMW testing the waters in the hardcore off-road segment.
There is news that the G74 is likely to continue using fuel power. BMW believes that pure electric off-road vehicles have not yet gained widespread market acceptance, even the pure electric version of the Mercedes G-Class faces the same challenges. The success of the Mercedes G-Class largely relies on its classic design, excellent off-road capabilities, and celebrity effect. BMW's design approach and differentiation strategy in rugged SUVs will also be a focal point for external attention. Car Quality Network will continue to follow and report more information about the new car.
