Amcor, Fedrigoni Create Recyclable Wet Wipe Packaging

PLASTICS TODAY 2025-05-16 15:07:49

Two global packaging leaders have developed a fully recyclable wet wipe package that meets forthcoming European Union environmental regulations.

Amcor and Fedrigoni announced their partnership has produced a recyclable flexible packaging solution combining Amcor's AmPrima Plus flow wrap with Fedrigoni's semi-rigid label. The entire package can be recycled in polyethylene (PE) streams across Europe, according to the companies.

The development addresses the EU's Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), which requires all packaging to be recyclable by 2030. The companies noted the mono-material design has been certified as recyclable by RecyClass and cyclos-HTP.

Lighter packaging option

The new packaging reduces weight by up to 15% compared to traditional multi-material packs with rigid labels. According to Amcor's Carbon Trust–certified assessment methodology, the solution decreases the carbon footprint by up to 55%. Companies using the packaging may see up to a 35% reduction in extended producer responsibility fees.

The AmPrima Plus flow wrap can incorporate post-consumer recycled content, helping brands prepare for 2030 EU mandates requiring minimum recycled content in plastic packaging, the companies said.

"By combining the AmPrima wet wipe flow wrap with Fedrigoni's semi-rigid label, we have achieved a complete pack designed for recycling in the PE recycling stream," said Geoffrey Gendebien, marketing manager for Home & Personal Care at Amcor.

Federico Lanzi, marketing and R&D Director at Fedrigoni Self-Adhesives, said improving recyclability of home and personal care products is crucial for PPWR regulation compliance. The project aligns with Fedrigoni's environmental goals targeting 100% recyclable materials by 2030.

3D molded fiber packaging

Earlier this week, Amcor and forestry industry company Metsä Group announced a collaboration to develop three-dimensional molded fiber packaging solutions with lidding and liner for a variety of food applications.

Combining Amcor’s advanced high-barrier film liner and lidding technology with Muoto, a wood-based molded fiber product developed by Metsä Spring, Metsä Group’s innovation company, the partnership seeks to deliver innovative fiber-based food packaging that protects perishable food products and extends shelf life.
