Xiaopeng he: LiDAR Is a Good Thing, But No Longer Essential in the Automotive Field
On the morning of May 21, following the launch event of the Xiaopeng GX, He Xiaopeng, Chairman and CEO of Xiaopeng Motors, Liu Xianming, Head of the General Intelligence Center, and Wu Anfei, General Manager of the Product Matrix, engaged in a dialogue with the media.
Some data suggests that an increasing proportion of vehicle models priced above RMB 150,000 are equipped with LiDAR. When asked whether XPeng, which has adopted a pure vision approach, would feel pressure, He Xiaopeng responded, “We have no pressure.”LiDAR is a great technology, but I believe it is not needed in the automotive field, so Xiaopeng is very firm on this. However, it is still needed in many other industries; that’s my view.
Liu Xianming, head of the General Intelligence Center at XPeng Group, added that whether LiDAR is necessary depends on a company's technology stack; there is no absolute answer. For users, the core of autonomous driving lies in its actual performance rather than its sensor configuration.XPeng remains committed to a lidar-free approach, with the key being the actual performance of its second-generation VLA. In extreme weather, at night, and in complex driving conditions, good results can still be achieved through high computing power, large models, and high-density sensors.
