Amid the global automotive market gradually shifting toward SUVs and electric vehicles, Kia has yet to abandon the traditional sedan segment. At the 2026 CEO Investor Day event, the South Korean automaker reiterated the importance of sedans in its U.S. product lineup and revealed plans for a second redesign of the Kia K5. According to multiple sources and the rendered images by Gotcha Cars, the facelifted K5 will not only feature design changes, but also significant upgrades in technology and hybrid systems, aiming to extend the product lifecycle until the end of this decade.

The most notable highlight of the second facelift of the Kia K5 is the adoption of the new TMED-II hybrid powertrain. This technology forms part of Kia’s strategy to expand its hybrid vehicle lineup to eight models by 2030. Kia states that, compared with its current hybrid system, the TMED-II can improve fuel efficiency and driving performance by approximately 4%. The new hybrid system focuses not only on fuel economy but also aims to deliver an instant acceleration feel similar to that of electric vehicles.

Moreover, this D-segment sedan is expected to integrate the E-Motion Drive technology and an electric all-wheel-drive system (E-AWD) to enhance driving stability and ride smoothness. Another noteworthy feature is the Vehicle-to-Load (V2L) function, previously available only on electric models such as the EV6 and EV9. This technology enables users to power external devices—such as laptops or small household appliances—using the vehicle’s high-voltage battery.

In addition to the upgrade in driving performance, the interior of the new Kia K5 will also be significantly modernized. Recently exposed test prototypes show that the car may be equipped with a new Pleos Connect platform based on the Android Automotive operating system and a 17-inch central control screen. This system is expected to bring a smartphone-like experience, with a more intuitive interface and stronger connectivity. However, Kia will still retain physical buttons for key functions to ensure convenient operation and driving safety.

The new Kia K5 facelift model is expected to be officially released in the U.S. market in 2027. This hybrid sedan will serve as a transitional option for consumers who are not yet ready to fully switch to electric vehicles but still wish to experience the technology and driving experience of the electrification era.
